A Beginner's Guide to Navigating Canals

If you are a first-time boater, the prospect of operating a canal lock might seem a bit intimidating. How do the paddles work? What is a windlass? Will the boat fit?

Rest assured, thousands of complete beginners master the locks every single year. In fact, most of our customers tell us that working the locks becomes the highlight of their trip! It is a great way to get some gentle exercise, chat with other boaters, and work together as a team.

What to Expect

Full Handover Training

Because our Middlewich base is located right next to a set of three locks, you are in the perfect place to learn. Before you set off on your holiday, one of our experienced Andersen Boats instructors will join you on board. We will take you through a lock step-by-step, ensuring you are completely confident before we wave you off.

Take Your Time

The golden rule of the waterways is that there is absolutely no rush. Canals operate at a maximum of 4mph. When approaching a lock, slow down, assess the situation, and communicate clearly with your crew. If another boat is already there, tie up at the moorings and wait your turn, it is a great opportunity to put the kettle on!

The Friendly Boating Community

If you are ever unsure what to do, just ask! The canal community is incredibly friendly and always willing to lend a hand or share some advice. You will often find volunteer lock keepers at busy flights during the summer months, and they are brilliant at helping novices safely manoeuvre through.
