If you are looking to step off the beaten path and immerse yourself in some of the UK's most spectacular scenery, the Caldon Canal is an absolute must-navigate.
Accessible from our Middlewich base on a 7 to 10-night holiday, this route takes you away from the busier trunk routes and straight into the heart of the Churnet Valley, often affectionately known as "Little Switzerland".
Route Highlights
1. The Churnet Valley
As you leave the Trent & Mersey and join the Caldon, the landscape dramatically changes. The canal winds its way through heavily wooded, steep-sided valleys. The tree canopy often meets overhead, creating a peaceful, dappled green tunnel that feels worlds away from everyday life.
2. The Churnet Valley Railway
At Consall Forge, the canal shares the valley floor with both the River Churnet and the heritage Churnet Valley Steam Railway. There is nothing quite like mooring up and watching a beautifully restored steam train chug past your narrowboat!
3. Froghall Wharf
The canal ends at the historic Froghall Wharf. It is a fantastic place to tie up, grab a cup of tea from the local tearoom, and explore the old lime kilns before turning your boat for the journey home.
