We believe that a family holiday is not quite complete without the family dog. That is why Andersen Boats is proud to be completely dog-friendly, allowing up to two dogs to travel for free on our fleet!
Narrowboat holidays are an absolute dream for dogs. With endless miles of towpath walks, countless scents to investigate, and plenty of dog-friendly canalside pubs, they will love the adventure just as much as you do. Here are our top tips for bringing your four-legged friend along.
Top Tips for Canine Captains
1. Pack the Essentials
Bring their favourite bed, throws to protect the boat furnishings, their usual food (to avoid upset tummies while travelling), plenty of poo bags, and a sturdy lead. A doggy towel is also a must for wiping muddy paws after a towpath walk!
2. Consider a Doggy Life Jacket
While many dogs are strong swimmers, the steep sides of the canal can make getting out of the water difficult. A dog life jacket with a handle on the back gives you peace of mind and an easy way to lift them out if they decide to take an unexpected plunge.
3. Lock Safety
Locks are fascinating, but they are heavy, wet, and have lots of moving parts. We highly recommend keeping your dog safely inside the cabin or securely tied up on the boat deck while you are operating the locks.
4. Pub Stops
The beauty of the canal network is the sheer number of traditional, dog-friendly pubs along the water. Keep an eye out for water bowls outside; that is usually a great sign that your pooch is welcome in the bar area.
