One of the greatest joys of a narrowboat holiday is the pace. Travelling at a gentle 4mph allows you to completely disconnect from modern life and immerse yourself in the natural world.
As spring arrives and the Cheshire countryside bursts into life, the canals become a vibrant corridor for British wildlife. Whether you are relaxing on the bow with a morning coffee or walking the towpath, here are some of the fantastic sights you might spot during your trip.
Nature to Look Out For
The Blue Flash of a Kingfisher
The undisputed favourite of canal boaters! Keep an eye on low-hanging branches ahead of the boat. You will often see a sudden, brilliant flash of electric blue and copper as a kingfisher darts low over the water, staying just ahead of your bow.
Ducks, Swans, and Cygnets
In spring, the waterways are full of new life. You will frequently be escorted by proud mallard ducks showing off their fluffy ducklings. Later in the season, you might spot graceful swans gliding along with their grey cygnets. (Remember to bring some floating duck pellets or peas, rather than bread, if you want to feed them!).
Water Voles and Herons
Listen out for the distinctive "plop" of a water vole slipping from the reedy banks into the canal. In the shallows, you are also almost guaranteed to spot the statuesque silhouette of a grey heron, patiently waiting for a catch.
