Are you looking for the perfect week-long getaway? For this adventure, we are stepping aboard the cosy, 2-berth Fjord Princess to tackle the stunning Caldon Canal.
Highly regarded as one of the most beautiful waterways in Britain, this out-and-back route takes exactly 7 nights. It offers a spectacular contrast between the rich industrial history of Stoke-on-Trent and the deep, remote forests of the Churnet Valley. Here is exactly how your week on the water could look.
Your 7-Night Caldon Canal Adventure
Captain's Prep: Maps & Guides
Before you cast off, we highly recommend downloading the free Open Canal Map app to your phone. It is a fantastic interactive tool for finding visitor moorings, water points, and pinpointing your exact location. For the ultimate captain's preparation, picking up a physical copy of the Pearson's Canal Companion: Four Counties & Cheshire Rings (which crucially covers the entire Caldon route!) will provide you with beautifully illustrated mile-by-mile maps and invaluable local history.
Day 1: The Handover & Setting Sail
Arrive at our Middlewich base at 1:00 PM to load your groceries onto the Fjord Princess. Following Andersen's signature handover, one of our instructors will stay with you through the first Middlewich locks, helping you put the lessons from our beginner's guide to locks into practice. In the late afternoon, head south on the Trent & Mersey Canal and moor up near Sandbach for your first pub dinner on the water.
Day 2: Tackling "The Cheshire Flight"
Start your morning by ascending the famous "Heartbreak Hill" (the Cheshire Flight Locks). It is a long flight, so everyone gets a great workout opening paddles and pushing gates! By the afternoon, the canal levels out as you pass through the incredibly atmospheric Harecastle Tunnel, a 40-minute subterranean journey. In the evening, moor up on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent.
Day 3: The Potteries into the Wilderness
Reach Etruria Junction and officially turn onto the Caldon Canal. You will cruise right through the heart of Stoke-on-Trent's industrial pottery heritage. By the afternoon, the city rapidly fades away, replaced by the incredibly scenic, winding Churnet Valley. Hugged by deep, overhanging trees, it is a perfect place to spot the spring wildlife. Moor near the remote Black Lion pub at Consall Forge for the night.
Day 4: The Froghall Terminus & Turning Around
Cruise to the end of the line at Froghall Wharf. If you are feeling adventurous, you can squeeze through the famously tiny Froghall Tunnel! Use the winding hole to turn the Fjord Princess around, and begin your slow, relaxed return journey. If the timing is right, you might even spot a heritage steam railway train chugging past your boat.
Day 5: Oatcakes & Industry
Cruise back out of the Churnet Valley towards Stoke. Stop near the Etruria Industrial Museum, the perfect excuse to hop off the boat and grab some traditional Staffordshire Oatcakes from a local shop. Pass back through the Harecastle Tunnel and moor up at the top of The Cheshire Flight, enjoying spectacular views over the Cheshire Plains.
Day 6: The Descent
What goes up must come down! Descend the Cheshire Locks. Because you have already done them once, your crew will look like absolute professionals. In the afternoon, enjoy a lazy, lock-free cruise past green pastures. For your second to final night, find a quiet stretch of towpath, hammer in your mooring pins, and enjoy a sunset dinner on the deck.
Day 7: The Final Stretch & A Middlewich Pint
A short morning cruise brings you right back to the outskirts of Middlewich. In the afternoon, park the boat at the Andersen base. You can use our Middlewich pub guide to pick the perfect local spot for a celebratory farewell meal on your final night.
Day 8: Heading Home
Wake up refreshed, pack up your car, and hand the keys back by 9:30 AM, taking a week's worth of fantastic canal memories home with you!
